LOFIC technology, short for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor technology, plays a significant role in invehicle camera systems. Here is a detailed introduction:
Working Principle
In the image sensor of an in-vehicle camera, a high-density capacitor placed next to each photodiode. When the photodiode receives too much light and the number of photoelectrons converted exceeds its maximum capacity, the excessoelectrons will flow into the adjacent capacitor. This prevents the overflow of photoelectrons from causing overexposure, allowing the sensor to better retain details the highlights and produce images that are closer to the real light and shadow scene.
Application Advantages
High Dynamic Range Imaging: In-vehicle cameras encounter complex lighting conditions during vehicle operation, such as entering and leaving tunnels, direct sunlight, and low light at night. LOFIC technology significantly enhances the camera's range, allowing it to clearly capture both the bright and dark details in high contrast scenes, avoiding overexposure or underexposure, and allowing the driver autonomous driving system to more accurately perceive the surrounding environment.
Enhanced Color Resolution: This technology can improve the camera's color resolution, making the colors in captured images more accurate and vivid. This is particularly important for the recognition of traffic signs, traffic lights, and other color information, providing more reliable visual input for intelligent driving systems.
Greater Visual Distance: Compared to traditional camera technology, LOFIC technology can improve the camera's visual distance, allowing vehicles to detect distant, pedestrians, or other vehicles earlier, reserving more time for decision-making and reaction in intelligent driving.
Efficient Use of Computing Power and Low Latency: LOFIC technology has a relatively low demand for computing power, which can release some computing power to improve the performance of other parts of the intelligent driving system, such the capacity and number of parameters of large models, thereby enhancing the overall performance and accuracy of the system. At the same time, the visual information does not need to through a complex information conversion process and can be directly used as input in the neural network, reducing the latency of the intelligent driving system and making the vehicle's reaction sensitive, improving driving safety and comfort.
Xpeng Motor is the first car company to apply LOFIC technology to in-vehicle cameras. Its AI Eye Vision Solution uses a single-pixel LOFIC architecture, which enhances the information acquisition capability of the vehicle's visual perception system under backlighting, high, and low light environments, providing better visual data support for intelligent driving.
